# 🍃 Lilypad Project Report: July 10, 2023

## 🌐 Overview

This week has been busy!!! Kai Davenport, our Chief Architect & Engineer alongside Luke Marsden, is back helping us make progress on the Lilypad testnet 🦄🦄!

Levi Rybalov has also shared the first copy of the whitepaper with us 🤯🤯!

We've also added new examples to the Lilypad v0 docs thanks to some of the awesome HackFS winners contributing and we spoke to them on the CODwg Live Jam last week too.

Of course, our focus is now on building for Paris, and this project report includes a full calendar list of where you'll find us - Alors, on y va!

## ⚒️ Lilypad Engineering Update

**TLDR**: Kai Davenport is back & Lilypad Modules Are Here!

### 🧰 Testnet Update

We now have dockerized the stack so that we can have users run nodes with one simple docker run command. We have also completed the work on rewriting how the code interacts with smart contracts, ripping out code that was unable to correctly parse strings in EVM events and replacing it (with some significant complications) with the [web3.py](http://web3.py) code for doing the same. We can now pass strings around in smart contracts!

We've developed the modules interface for different use cases and are now filling those in. In parallel, we are working on deploying our own test Ethereum network for the testnet, plugging in a faucet for it, and getting the entire stack working end to end in production.

Here's a snip of us testing out our first module! (I think we chose our first moo-dule well XD)

Also... a sneak peak at upcoming functionality...! 😮

### 📍 IPC Benchmarked

"Spacenet ([IPC testnet](https://github.com/consensus-shipyard/spacenet/blob/main/README.md#getting-started-for-developers)) is not *yet another* Filecoin testnet. Its consensus layer has been modified to integrate [Mir](https://github.com/filecoin-project/mir), a distributed protocol implementation framework. The current version of Spacenet runs an implementation of the [Trantor BFT consensus](https://hackmd.io/P59lk4hnSBKN5ki5OblSFg) over Mir. And did we forget to mention Spacenet comes with [Interplanetary Consensus (IPC)](https://ipc.space/) support?
Spacenet aims to provide developers with a testbed to deploy their FVM use cases and innovate with new Web3 applications that can benefit from operating in subnets."

Following on from last week's chain benchmarking, IPC was also tested. Here's the results - IPC performed on par with Polygon ZkEVM (& faster than Ethereum Sepolia). It's worth noting though that IPC is able to be tweaked. You can change transaction times on the subnet to suit yourself. It also offers features not seen in other blockchain networks.

It's also worth noting that this is running on Spacenet - with 15s blocktimes. The subnets of IPC should run at 1s blocktimes 🤯🤯 ...

## 🎓 Lilypad Research Update

As we work on writing the specification for our autonomous agents, we are realizing that the scope of our problem is wider than we originally anticipated. Not only are we addressing a long-standing problem in distributed computing, but we are in fact creating what can become a standard for the way that machines interact with each other, and eventually with humans. The study of machine-machine interaction and human-machine interaction has evolved over the decades, and we are now at a tipping point where machines are coming close to passing some versions of the Turing [test.](http://test.As)

[As](http://test.As) prior research has warned, we must be responsible as we move forward with this research. We must ensure not only that these machines are aligned with human interests, but also that they have the capacity to cooperate with each other (and that they use this capacity). To accomplish this, we must design them to move past worst-case behavior in an incentive-compatible manner. Whether this can be done using existing research, or new methods have to be invented or discovered, remains to be seen.

## 🔮 What's Next?

Other than all the excitement of Paris, what you can really look forward to next is a completely functional Lilypad v1 Testnet with Docs!

Also - we're iterating on the 1st draft of the whitepaper now... 🤯🤯

And don't tell anyone... but we think the testnet has been named... ;)
Happy naming day!
